Dog Bite Victims

Unfortunately, millions of adults and children every year are severely injured from a dog bite or animal attack. A dog bite or animal attack can occur at a friend’s house, in a neighbor’s backyard, walking down the street, in the local park, or any number of other places. Most dog bites and animal attacks occur because the owner fails to control the animal with a fence, lease, or proper training. In some instances, owners simply cannot control their animals as a result of the animal’s size or vicious nature.

New Jersey Laws on Dog Bites

Unlike some other states, New Jersey law on dog bites does not entitle a dog to its one free bite and holds dog owners responsible for any injuries resulting from a dog bite. People bitten or attacked by a dog in a public place or while a guest on another dog owner’s property may be entitled to compensation from the dog’s owner regardless of whether the owner knew about the dog’s vicious nature.

New Jersey law allows victims of a dangerous animal attack to recover from the animal’s owner when the owner has knowledge of his or her animal’s vicious or dangerous trait. An animal’s dangerous or vicious trait generally refers to the animal’s natural, inclination, or habitual tendency to endanger a person or property. The animal’s owner may know of these vicious or dangerous traits if the owner knows about the previous attacks or the animal’s dangerous disposition towards people.

Serious Dog Bite and Animal Attack Injuries

The most severe animal attacks can be fatal. Less severe animal attacks can result in serious physical injuries, such as fractured bones, nerve damage, loss of vision, and permanent scarring and disfigurement. In addition to the pain and suffering typically associated with these injuries, the victim of an animal attack many suffer from pain, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of income, and disability. Many victims of dog bites and animal attacks require reconstructive surgery as a result of the attack and incur significant medical expenses.
